THE PEACEMAKER

THE PEACEMAKER:A person who has the ability to make peace with his or her natural surroundings.

Dear journal,
My name is Nichole Edwards. My friends and family call me Niquey (pronouced nicky). I am from *harlem* and the year is 2012. I am fourteen years old. I've been going to this school called Frederick Douglass Academy for three years now and I am just tired already. I am in the ninth grade. I have a great principal, I have teachers who are strong believers and some that are just plain crazy (Mr.Crazman), and great friends. Oh yeah! I just remembered why I was writing in this journal....My two best friends are totally not getting along. My friends' names are Shanay-nay and Chantinique. They are both like sisters to me and they are kind of protective sometimes. I've known Shanay-nay since we were 2 years old and Chantinique since 2nd grade. The problem is that Shanay-nay and Chantinique don't really like each other. Dear journal, this is my story of how I (the peacemaker) do my job.

Dear journal,
Today was another lousy day. My friends had another argument, my cat keeps jumping out the 2nd floor window of my apartment every other day, I'm on punishment for not cleaning my room and my New york State Tests are coming up in 5 days from now! The only reason my friends fight is because they both don't want to share me as a friend. Now, just because I'm the youngest out of the three of us, that does not mean anything! I can make my own decisions and right now, I don't want to be anyone's friend. I work too hard to be messing around with this problem right now and I need some time to myself and to get it together for this test. I want peace NOW! Today I explained my feelings with both my friends indivisually and Chantinique understood me but.......Shanay-nay took it the wrong way. This is the result of a bigger fight. GREAT! NOW WHAT! Shanay-nay went crazy after that and blaimed Chantinique for brain-washing me. ME! You don't want to mess with Shanay-nay. She will get somebody killed in one call to her infamous big brother, Deeptooth. Don't ask.
Deeptooth has been in jail since a little boy for selling drugs and attemped murder. Anyway, Shanay-nay told Chantinique to wait and see because she's not going see it coming. I just hope nothing happens.

Dear journal.
I'm crying now. I am so hurt. For the last 3 days my friends have been trying to put me in the middle of the situation. I don't even feel like I'm ready to take the ELA State Test tomorrow and you know what, I'm not even going to deal with them I'm going to have a meeting with the both of them and sit them down at a lunch table and talk about it in a calm and cool way. This is what I said:

Me:Yo! Shanay-nay come over hear! Sit with me for a minute.
Shanay-nay:NO!
Me:Just for a little while....Come on!
Shanay-nay:Fine.
Shanay-nay came over to the table and I called Chantinique. I was not surprised that they both said the samething.

Me:What's going on with you two?
They started to argue but I cut them both off.
Me:Why can't you guys just be normal people and share me as a friend.
Shanay-nay:But-
Me:Please just listen because I don't see what caused this whole fight.
Shanay-nay:You like her better than me and now you hang out with her more!
Chantinique:No she does not! She hangs out with you more than me.
Me:LISTEN! Right now, I have not been hanging around anyone because I need to study right now and I don't need this on my mind right now. Worst of all, the weather is getting more humid and hot and I don't have anytime. I treat you both with the same respect that I get from you girls. There is no favoritism. So say sorry!
Shanay-nay:sorry.
Chantinique:sorry.

Dear journal,
I feel like I did very well on my test and now I can finally breath. Shanay-nay and Chantinique are getting to finally know each other now and I am relieved. I thought something was going to happen for a moment. Well, today was a great day. It was crazy too! Mr.Crazman started to tell us that when he screams at us, it's because he gets excited about teaching. Then he said that his family thinks that he's crazy. He kept looking at me and pointing at me like I was his arch enemy or something, a girl in my class named Jasmine was laughing all in my ear when I sat in front of her, my cat jumped out the window again and brought back a girl cat at 6:00pm and my mom kept laughing on the phone with her old friends. It was also a good day because I finally got to rest and I passed the test but, I'm still kind of bumbed about how my cat brought back a girl cat, who appeared to resemble a sheep in wolves clothing. When she sat on my livingroom floor she couldn't get back up. That made me mad (giggles). Anyway, goodnight!

80 DAYS LATER

Dear journal,
I have not heard from my friends in a while. I say "hi!" and they look at me like i have 12 heads or something. This goes to show how friends can treat you and then turn on you. You will never see it coming but that's all a part of being the ................PEACEMAKER!

The Watsons' Go to Birmingham-1963 Project step 3

My family
Dear journal,
The year is 1963 and my mommy and my daddy have agreed on sending my big brother, Byron, to Birmingham for the summer or maybe even for the whole YEAR to spend the summer with Grandma Sands. I thought they just joking at first because my parents always say they would do something when they really don't. I am five years old. Kenny is ten and By is 13. By is still in the sixth grade for some reason. All I know is that no one speaks about it so I just keep quiet.

The weird watsons
Dear journal,
My family is different, you know, ''Unique''. I think that's what they call it. Anyway, that pretty much explains why people call us the ''Weird Watsons". My dad is very funny, my mom is a sweet person and she takes care of all us, Kenny, myself, and By. Kenny is the smartest and also the middle child. Kenny is the most if honest out of all of us. By, oh that Byron, he is the most moodiest thing you will ever MEET! You see, I don't understand why he gives mommy and daddy such a hard time. Lastly, me. I am the sweetest and yet the youngest. Mommy calls me her angel.

On our way to Birmingham
Dear journal,
Today we finally made it to Birmingham and met Grandma Sands. "She looks old but, that's grandmothers are supposed to look". I guessed.

Do You Remeber The Time

One song that reminds me of something is "Do You Remeber Time" by Michael Jackson. Every New Year i hear that song. After the ball drops, my brother always sings that song, and makes up his own words to it if he can't remeber it.Trust me, it's very disturbing!

The African Burial Ground

On October 9th 2009, my class and i went on a trip to The African Burial Ground. The African Burial Ground is a sort of cemetary that was used in the 16 and 17 hundreds to bury African American slaves. The African Burial Ground is important to people because maybe people would like to know about their ancestors.
While at The African Burial Ground, our tour guider played a short film about The African Burial Ground, and how it was first discovered in the 1990s. The African Burial Ground was discovered by construction workers who, were building a building. They found bones, old jewelry and more. They also built a wall so tall, so that people wouldn't have know what going on. Then the word got out to someone who reported it to Fox News. Fox News had a helicopter fly right over the wall and report on what was happening behind that wall.
When people found out what was going on, how do you think they felt? They felt mad, disappointed and very upset. Why? They were very upset because when you go to a real cemetary it's quiet and peaceful so all souls can rest peacefully. New york is not the right place for that. When you look around New York, you see cars, mostly people, and you hear alot of noise. So, that wasn't the right place to bury them.
What i learned that day made me think about how miserable and hard Frederick Douglass' life as a slave was. I found out that when slaves were captured they were shipped somewhere on a boat for about 3 months with no food, water, shackled and no where to go to the bathroom. Also, boats back then were really cramped and i cannot imagine people shackled on the with some of them dying, and having to go to the bathroom on theirselves, and and probably even giving birth. I also heard that they were sometimes punished by getting whipped or hanged. That's what i learned from The African Burial Ground.
